NAEA: Over half of Brits think banks need to start lending again

More than half of British adults believe that banks need to throw their cautions to the wind and start lending to consumers again if the economy is to show signs of improvement in the future.

This is according to research carried out by the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA), which shows that 58 per cent of Brits want to see greater availability of lending.

A further 22.5 per cent of respondents said that they have not been accepted for a mortgage that they are qualified for, while 56 per cent said that a relaxation in lending restrictions and lower deposit demands would help them in their quests.

Chief executive of the NAEA Peter Bolton King said: "The government must do more to put pressure on those banks that are refusing to lend, while highlighting those banks that are easing restrictions to help get the economy moving again."

The NAEA has around 10,000 members and works to protect the interests of estate agents and property owners in the UK.
