Building firms are benefiting from the recession as people choose to develop their homes rather than move to save money.

Gavin Davies, owner of GDAL in Rotherfield Greys, which specialises in room preparation, structural works and extensions, says he has been working “flat out” this year.

He said: “People have realised they are happy where they are and can make improvements. No matter how wealthy people are, they are just not moving. The housing market has come to a standstill.”

Mr Davies, who is also an actor and playwright, backed the Standard’s Think Local Campaign. He said: “It is exactly what is needed at the moment.

“If you are spending money, you should try to use a Henley firm. There are so many great producers, suppliers and traders in the area and it is important that we look after them.”
